Objects above the 2D lidar plane
2D lidars are planar and do not have the capability to detect obstacles above the lidar plane. Inability to detect these obstacles leads to incomplete situational awareness for the robot. Often robots are clothes-lined and/or unable to navigate a given environment safely.
Objects below the 2D lidar plane
2D lidars are planar and do not have the capability to detect obstacles below the lidar plane. In real-world environments, like factory floors or commercial spaces, the probability of having objects on the floor is high and the inability to detect them is a serious issue. It not only hampers navigation accuracy but also has safety concerns as well.
